Doug's Ride - Burnaby to the Black Sea
About Doug

Doug grew up in Burnaby, British Columbia and graduated from Burnaby Central Secondary School in 1970. Post secondary and graduate degrees in Education were received from Simon Fraser University and the University of Oregon, respectively. Doug retired from a fulfilling career in Education in 2008 which included intermediate teaching, community school coordination, curriculum consulting and administration at the school and district levels. Two areas of greatest interest to Doug have been Library and Aboriginal Education. Doug has always felt that collaborative relationships with colleagues has been the most rewarding factor in achieving effective learning opportunities for young people in schools. Once retired, Doug taught cross country skiing to school kids at Hollyburn Mountain and registered at Capilano University in the Studio Arts Program, with a particular interest in print-making.

As a secondary school student, Doug helped to organize a bicycle club as he held a passion for cycling . A part time job after school yielded enough money to purchase a metallic purple Gitane 10 speed road bike which took him many places on the mainland and Vancouver Island. A fantasy of his was to cycle the world although this was not a particularly realistic proposition at this point of his life. Now that he has the more time to pursue his interests, it's possible to pick up where he left off, in the pursuit of a long distance cycling trip. He admits that his intention is still as keen but his legs are not as strong as they used to be, yet it's still possible to embark on an inter-continental journey. In addition to the "fun" of such an adventure, Doug feels that this would be a great opportunity to raise funds for a humanitarian project..."Clean Water for Ethiopia", organized by Hope International, an international development agency based in New Westminster, B.C. It's an ambitious project, but is one that Doug thinks is possible and worthwhile.

Doug will write on his blog on rest days.
